#79 On Starting Without Knowing
This one’s for the builders, those of you that jump into it, the ones who are figuring things out as they go. Because sometimes... that’s the only way to do it.
In this episode of Happy Human, I talk about the power of starting without knowing. Whether it's messing with music like I'm doing right now, building a gym bag like I did at the beginning of 2025 and sewing with zero background, or making podcast episodes from scratch... this is about learning by doing.
I’ve never been one to wait for full instructions. Most of the things I’ve created... podcasts, clothing, art, even this app... all started with a curiosity and no roadmap. I have no music theory, but I know what sounds good so I know I can figure out the music thing. No sewing background, but I needed a gym bag and I learned about sewing patterns. Didn’t know how to use Photoshop at first... but now it's been a part of my creative life for 24 yrs or so.
The point of this conversation is that you don’t need to know it all to begin. Most of the time, the knowing comes after the doing. Now if someone asks me how to podcast, I can walk them straight through it but they have to figure it out on their own.
I share stories about how even “Happy Human” merch came out of moments of curiosity. How creating art, podcasting, designing, and building all started without perfect prep. I talk about Phil Collins writing In the Air Tonight without knowing what it was about and how sometimes this creative magic happens when you’re just in motion.
There’s also some talk about structure, guardrails, and how they help once you’re in the game. But it starts with motion.... don't let the rules hold you back.
So if you’ve got something you’ve been wanting to try... music, clothing, a side project, whatever... don’t wait to know everything. Just start.
Download the Happy Human Studio app on the App Store or Google Play, become a member (top left corner of the app), and check out some of the art, tools, and blog posts I’ve shared in there.

Get started without knowing. You'll be fine.
