Artists intentionally stimulate demand for their product whether they know it or not and that’s the definition of marketing. When I listed this as part of the series I thought this would be the easier topic to share my thoughts on but I realize that it’s nothing new to know that artists market themselves to their potential audience and at the same time they market their products.
There is a personal interest of mine of how personal branding has changed how artists market themselves to their audience. There are artists who follow a particular aesthetic in their work which stimulates demand for it. Banksy who as of the time I typed this post has not been identified… has marketed himself by sparking interest into his mysterious persona and with this, his work is wanted by many and admired by even more people who can’t afford it. His personal brand, in my opinion, is showcased in his work and how he announces his creations because it’s also a mysterious way.
Mystery is marketing tactic as is the artist who is extremely loud and flashy drawing attention to themselves. The market decides and the marketer targets specific markets. Artists have to be conscious of this if they want to get in front of an audience and stimulate demand.
