I got really into CrossFit back in 2011 and it all happened because my wife joined a local gym a month earlier than me and she was seeing results so I had to catch up.
The CrossFit gym we started going to was G7 Athletics that is owned by the Garza family. Becky Garza, who I went to grade school with is one of the owners and they asked if I would create a mural for one of the walls at the gym.
It’s a pretty big wall and I was one — grateful to be asked and two — a little overwhelmed in terms of filling the wall with something. I got to thinking about it and I thought of how much positive energy is created at the gym as people chase their fitness goals. I also wanted a wall that people wanted to photograph themselves at so it had to be loud!
I got to sketching and I came up with a burst of energy concept with a clean G7 Athletics logo as the center of the piece. Once I had the concept, it was time to show up and paint it and like always the G7 community did not let down as a few of the members joined to paint the wall. We painted this over the course of 5 hours… started around 6pm-ish.
The process: I sketched the art piece out, I scanned it and vectorized it to blow it up into a printed template that I had to tape together and then be ready to stick on the wall and trace the exact dimensions of the logo. This wall is now up and ready to be hit by wall balls and to come out in selfies.
