nobody knows you’re a dog

“On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.”

That’s the caption for a cartoon drawn by Peter Steiner for The New Yorker on July 5, 1993.

It depicts one dog sitting on a chair in front of a computer expressing this to another dog that looks up at him. I stumbled across this while watching a documentary and thought the cartoon drawing was incredibly simple and incredibly sad because it tells the story of what’s going on right now – 28 years after it was drawn.

This is going somewhere. Hang in there-

Fake Famous, a documentary that aired on HBO this past February 2021 follows the lives of three individuals looking for fame on Instagram. They are assisted by the documentary team in creating a fake life to gain a mass following.

Think – fake followers, fake likes, fake comments that are purchased to create the illusion of fame and to see if they can actually get these “influencers” to start getting paid by brands.

Two of them drop out and one rides it out.

“On the internet, nobody knows you’re a dog.”
