Artists as the Audience

Can you get inspired when you already know how something is made?

When I come across something I don’t understand, I personally am trying to figure it out and once I do… I get inspired to create something with this new found knowledge. This led me to think a little about artists/creatives being part of the audience. I consider myself a creative person so I’ll give a bit of a personal account here as well as talk a bit about how some famous creative people become part of the audience.

I was watching In & Of itself by Derek DelGaudio, it’s a documentary of a show he performed in front of live audiences. Derek is an artist, a performer, a magician. I highly recommend you go and check it out because his performance is amazing. The point here is that there was an individual in the audience that night. The individual who enjoyed the show and was just as mesmerized as the rest of the audience was none other than fellow magician, David Blaine.

It’s no different than professional basketball players tuning in to watch a game on their day off or the musician who attends a concert on the weekend since he has no gigs to play at themselves. Creative people need to see other creative people using creativity to bring creations to life. Artists need to suspend their insight of knowing how things are made and enjoy the show. Knowing how something is made can rob you of the experience but if you are consciously aware of how something is made and still appreciate the art of making it then chances are the artist will be inspired by the show.

Artists are the best audience because they appreciate the effort and they know how much work it took. I like to dissect music, movies, art and all other sorts of creations because I walk away knowing it’s possible for me to create something.

I was a blog reader before I started this blog.
