Artists as Tweakers

Ok. Maybe I went a little far on my previous post about artists being innovators by saying everything that is created is an innovation. The creations are innovations because they are something new but the newness may have resulted from a slight tweak to the previous versions of the creation.

This leads to the thought of artists being tweakers. They get inspired and tweak the ideas they come across a bit to create something new. There’s an article by Malcom Gladwell written for the New Yorker about Steve Jobs where he breaks down the idea of Jobs being a great tweaker. (Read the article here.)

There’s the design of the first IPod which was inspired by Dieter Rams design for Braun in which Jony Ive, the IPod designer, would be a considered a tweaker because of the design aesthetic.

Artists are tweakers.
