The Sunk Cost Studio

I remember meeting the artist 8 years ago.

I wanted to be inspired and they wanted to inspire others through their work.

I wanted to start projects, they wanted to finish projects.

I showed up at their studio a couple of days later and I was in awe and they were in– well now I know, that on that day, they were in aw.

There were mounted canvases on the wall with a couple of paint brush strokes on one, a shot of spray paint on another, and there was another canvas sitting on an easel by the wall with an artist’s palette that sat on a stool right by it with all sorts of colored paint. The paint was dry… both on the palette and on the canvas.

A long wooden work bench sat at one end of the room. There was a piece of steel wire shaped into the figure of a human skeleton that sat on a square base. A piece of clay molded into an unfinished teddy bear sat on one end of the tabletop.

Their laptop sat open on the table and they showed me how they were designing their landing page for their personal site.

I told them how inspired I was by all the creations they were working on.

“That’s the one I want to finish” as they signaled at the canvas on the easel. “I haven’t touched that canvas in a couple of months–I bought some good paint from overseas for it –“

“Badass… that wiring over there–is that a sculpture?”

“yeah–I got into sculpturing 2 years ago–it was a 8 week course–I need to use all the shit I bought for it.”

“you working on some of that today?–“

“no, not at all. I have to download some graphics from Shutterstock since the month ends today–“

“oh. got it – you working on some graphics?”

“Not today–just downloading. I gotta heat press some tees for a buddy of mine.”

“oh. got it.”

Over the next 8 years I saw the accumulation of started projects and them striving to finish them.

I started projects and now I want to finish them.
